Fall is one of the best times to travel in the U.S. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is mild, and prices drop in many tourist destinations. Over the years, I’ve uncovered some of the best budget-friendly places in the U.S. to visit during the fall, and I’m excited to share them with you! If you’re looking to explore beautiful landscapes, dive into rich culture, or just relax on the cheap, these destinations have you covered without draining your bank account.

1. Asheville, North Carolina
If you love fall foliage as much as I do, then Asheville, North Carolina, is a must-visit in autumn. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the area transforms into a sea of red, orange, and yellow during the fall months. Hiking through Pisgah National Forest or driving the Blue Ridge Parkwayoffers some of the most stunning views you’ll ever see, and both activities are completely free!
When I visited, I found Asheville to be incredibly budget-friendly. The food scene is amazing, with plenty of local spots offering delicious meals at reasonable prices. Be sure to try the BBQ — you won’t regret it! Plus, Asheville has tons of free events in the fall, from local festivals to art walks in the downtown area. The cooler weather is perfect for exploring, and the city’s charm makes it easy to see why it’s a great fall destination for those traveling on a budget.
2. San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of fall getaways, but it’s a hidden gem, especially for budget-conscious travelers. The fall weather here is ideal — warm but not too hot, and perfect for strolling along the famous River Walk. I loved walking through this scenic area, which is filled with vibrant restaurants, shops, and historic sites. The best part? It’s free to explore!
One of my favorite parts of visiting San Antonio in the fall was touring the historic Alamo. Not only is it free to visit, but it’s also a fascinating dive into American history. Fall is also fiesta season in San Antonio, so there’s no shortage of budget-friendly events, including live music, food festivals, and cultural celebrations.
You can easily find affordable accommodations outside the tourist-heavy areas, and local food is both delicious and cheap. Be sure to grab some authentic Tex-Mex while you’re there!
3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee & North Carolina)
When it comes to budget-friendly fall adventures, it’s hard to beat Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places to see fall foliage, but it’s also one of the few national parks in the U.S. that doesn’t charge an entrance fee — meaning more money stays in your pocket for other fun things!
When I visited in the fall, the views were jaw-dropping. The park is home to hundreds of hiking trails that offer incredible panoramas of the mountains, waterfalls, and forests. If hiking isn’t your thing, the scenic drives through the park are just as rewarding.
The nearby towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offer budget accommodations, and there are plenty of affordable restaurants serving up classic Southern comfort food. It’s the perfect place to relax, take in the beauty of nature, and enjoy some peace and quiet — without spending a fortune.
4. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah, Georgia, is the epitome of Southern charm, and in the fall, the city’s moss-draped oaks and historic architecture look even more magical. I’ve always loved the slower pace of life in Savannah, where you can take your time exploring beautiful public squares, historic homes, and scenic riverfront views.
Fall in Savannah is budget-friendly in part because so much of what makes the city special is free to enjoy. Walking tours of the city are either low-cost or free, and many of the city’s most iconic sites, like Forsyth Park and River Street, cost nothing to visit.
The food in Savannah is worth the trip alone. I found that you can easily enjoy authentic Southern cuisine without breaking the bank, especially if you hit up local diners and family-owned spots. Savannah’s fall festivals are also a big draw, with events ranging from free art shows to affordable food and drink festivals.
5. Albuquerque, New Mexico
If you’re looking for something a little different, head to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where you’ll find a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. I visited during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which is a must-see in the fall! It’s one of the most affordable major events in the U.S., and watching hundreds of colorful hot air balloons take to the sky is nothing short of magical.
Albuquerque also boasts an affordable cost of living, which means your travel dollars stretch further. The city is packed with budget-friendly attractions, from exploring Old Town to hiking in the Sandia Mountains. Be sure to check out the local markets, where you can find handmade goods and local cuisine without spending a ton.
In the fall, the weather is mild, making it perfect for outdoor activities like visiting Petroglyph National Monument or biking along the Rio Grande. Affordable accommodations are easy to find, especially if you book in advance.
6. Door County, Wisconsin
For a peaceful fall escape that won’t cost you a lot, Door County, Wisconsin,is one of my go-to spots. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, this charming region is known for its picturesque small towns, stunning coastal views, and, of course, delicious cherry pies!
In the fall, the crowds thin out, and you can enjoy Door County’s beauty at your own pace. Whether you’re hiking through Peninsula State Park or exploring the quaint towns of Fish Creek and Sister Bay, there’s plenty to do that doesn’t require spending a lot of money. I loved taking a scenic drive along the coast, stopping at roadside farm stands, and relaxing by the lake.
Accommodations here range from cozy cabins to affordable motels, and you can find great deals on local food, especially if you stick to the family-owned spots.
7. Flagstaff, Arizona
Flagstaff, Arizona, might surprise you as a budget-friendly fall destination, but this charming mountain town is the perfect base for exploring some of Arizona’s best natural wonders. Fall brings cooler weather, making it an ideal time to visit Grand Canyon National Park, which is just a short drive away. Flagstaff itself is surrounded by beautiful forests that are perfect for hiking, especially as the leaves start to change.
What I loved most about Flagstaff is its affordability. You can find budget accommodations, and the town is filled with low-cost (but delicious) dining options. Fall also means fewer tourists, so it’s easier to snag a deal on activities and lodging. Plus, the stargazing in Flagstaff is world-class, and it’s free to enjoy thanks to the city’s dark sky initiative.
