1. Isla Holbox, Mexico

Located just off the Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Holbox feels like the best-kept secret in Mexico. You won’t find any cars here, just sandy roads, colorful murals, and some of the most laid-back vibes you could ask for. When I first arrived, I felt like I had stumbled into a postcard. Between the bioluminescent waters, where the sea glows at night, and the whale sharks that visit every summer, this place is an absolute paradise for nature lovers.
The beaches are stunning and relatively uncrowded, perfect for sunbathing or grabbing a cocktail from a local beach bar. Don’t leave without trying the fresh ceviche — it’s out of this world! The beauty of Isla Holbox is that it’s still a bit under the radar, so it hasn’t been overrun by tourists.
2. Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia

If you want to really get off the grid, Koh Rong Samloem is where you need to go. This tiny island off the coast of Cambodia is the definition of remote. There’s not much Wi-Fi, and the electricity is limited — so it’s perfect if you’re looking to unplug.
The island is dotted with small bungalows that sit right on the beach. I spent my days lounging on Saracen Bay’s white sand beaches, snorkeling in the crystal-clear water, and exploring hidden waterfalls in the jungle. The locals are warm and welcoming, and you’ll find plenty of spots serving up fresh seafood for a fraction of the price you’d pay elsewhere. If peace and quiet are what you’re after, Koh Rong Samloem is the perfect escape.
3. Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Aitutaki in the Cook Islands feels like it’s straight out of a fantasy. The Aitutaki Lagoon is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, with water so blue it doesn’t seem real. You can spend your days snorkeling among coral reefs, paddleboarding across the lagoon, or even taking a traditional vaka (canoe) out into the water.
What I loved most was the slow pace of life here — there’s no rush, no stress, just the sound of the waves and the occasional rooster crowing in the distance. There’s something so untouched about Aitutaki, and even though it’s one of the more popular islands in the Cook Islands, it still feels like a hidden gem compared to more mainstream tropical destinations.
4. Lord Howe Island, Australia

Lord Howe Island is an absolute treasure and one of Australia’s best-kept secrets. This small island is UNESCO World Heritage-listed for its unique ecosystem. When I first arrived, I was blown away by how lush and green everything was — the island is filled with hiking trails, towering mountains, and pristine beaches.
One of my favorite experiences was snorkeling at Ned’s Beach, where you can literally walk right into the water and be surrounded by tropical fish. The island is perfect for adventurers who love hiking and snorkeling, but it’s also great for those who just want to relax and take in the scenery. Plus, it’s highly regulated to limit the number of visitors, so you’ll never feel overcrowded.
5. La Digue, Seychelles

La Digue in the Seychelles is the island of my dreams. The beaches here are so beautiful it’s almost ridiculous. Anse Source d’Argent, with its pink sand and towering granite boulders, is easily one of the most photographed beaches in the world — and for good reason. But beyond the beaches, what makes La Digue special is its slow pace of life.
The only way to get around is by bicycle, and the island is dotted with charming guesthouses and small restaurants serving Creole cuisine. I spent my days cycling from one beach to the next, stopping to snorkel or sunbathe whenever I pleased. It’s a small island, but there’s so much to explore, and every corner feels like paradise.
6. Flores Island, Azores

For a truly unique tropical island experience, head to Flores Island in the Azores. This island is a hidden gem in the Atlantic Ocean, with lush greenery, dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls everywhere you turn. It’s not your typical palm tree-lined tropical island, but its beauty is unparalleled.
I loved hiking the Lagoa Comprida trail, which took me past volcanic craters filled with bright blue water. The island is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so it’s perfect for nature lovers. There’s a sense of peace and remoteness on Flores that makes it feel like a world apart from the more touristy islands in the region.
7. Naukacuvu Island, Fiji

When people think of Fiji, they often picture luxury resorts, but Naukacuvu Island offers a much more authentic experience. This island is part of the Yasawa Islands chain, and it’s a little harder to get to — but so worth the effort. When I arrived, I was greeted by friendly locals and immediately felt like I was part of their community.
The beaches here are stunning, with soft white sand and crystal-clear water, but what really made my experience special was the connection with the local culture. I spent evenings listening to traditional Fijian music, eating freshly caught fish, and watching the sunset over the Pacific. It’s the perfect destination for those looking to experience the real Fiji.
Conclusion
If you’re like me and love discovering tropical islands that are still under the radar, these seven secret gems should be at the top of your list. From the remote beauty of Koh Rong Samloem to the stunning pink sands of La Digue, each of these islands offers something unique and unforgettable. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, or just want to experience a slice of paradise before the rest of the world catches on, these tropical islands won’t disappoint.
